Bombarded by All Veterans Park to the south, Brookville-Seminary Valley is a large, residential community located in the western end of Alexandria, Virginia. Shopping malls are just a few steps away while major interstates and neighborhood parks aren’t far either.

Located in the West End

The area is bounded by Polk Avenue to the north, North Latham Street to the east, All Veterans Park and Brookvalley Park to the south, and I-395 completes the town’s jurisdiction to the west. Communities like Parkside at Alexandria, Kenmore, and Jordan Street border the land to the immediate north, Shirley Duke is to the east and Park Pavilion and finally Cameron Station sits to the south of Brookville-Seminary Valley. The Episcopal High School is very close, as is important destinations like the Landmark Mall, Old Town Alexandria, and Fort Ward Park.

History on Fort Ward

Fort Ward—which sits adjacent to nearby W Braddock Road—is a former Union Army installation now located just north of Brookville-Seminary Valley. It was the fifth largest fort built to defend Washington, DC in the American Civil War and today acts as a historic 43-acre neighborhood park featuring a museum with American Civil War subjects and artifacts.

It was named for James Harmon Ward. It was designed with platforms for 24 guns and a 100 pound Parrott gun. The larger guns made the fort vulnerable if besieged. Liberated slaves—also known as contrabands—helped build the defenses to protect DC from invasion by Confederate forces. The Fort was thus named for the first Union naval officer to die in the war.


The quickest way to Fort Ward Park is North Van Dorn Street which runs adjacent to I-395 on the western end of the neighborhood. Interstate-395 is the most traveled road in the area and links residents to Washington, DC and beyond. For those without a car or who want to leave their car at home, Metrobus and DASH bus provide service in the area and will take passengers around Alexandria and to other nearby neighborhoods. The Van Dorn Metro station is the nearest station to Brookville-Seminary Valley and services the Blue and Yellow Lines.

Bungalows to Colonials

Brookville-Seminary Valley is not only renowned for its terrific location and notable attractions but also for its diverse housing options as it features townhouses, single-family homes, and condominiums. Tucked back from busy streets in the area, the community also includes small 1950s-era brick bungalow homes and newer town homes set on tree-lined streets. This juxtaposition between dissimilar housing properties, along with its close access to the Metro station and being near Old Town and Washington, DC are other reasons why so many families are deciding to make Brookville-Seminary Valley their next home.

Nearby Restaurants & the Nightlife Scene


Port City Brewing Company is a nearby industrial brewery offering a tasting room with house-made draft beers plus public tours. Tempo is also located here and is a fabulous restaurant serving upscale French and Italian cuisine in an airy, art-filled space. Los Toltecos is next door and is a more casual eatery serving Mexican fare with an extensive bar and outdoor seating packed with bingo night, trivia, karaoke, and comedy nights. Landmark Mall isn’t terribly far from Brookville-Seminary Valley and offers abundance of retail services as well as a playground for kids, a food court, and well-known department stores.


The Foxchase Shopping Center is to the east of the community and offers plenty of dining options like Samurai Hibachi & Sushi Bar. This wonderful spot has chefs turning your dinner into a fabulous show with stylish cooking techniques and friendly banter. Excellent choices found here include the tasty hibachi steak or the crispy California roll at the sushi bar. Genova Pizza specializes in several varieties of pizzas, as well as hot pasta dishes, sandwiches and gyros. For great happy hour specials try Alley Cat. Offering karaoke, this spot is a favorite among locals who come to relax with numerous billiard tables, live music, and a plethora amount of TVs with sports from all over the world. Nick’s Nightclub is another joint well-known for its casual setting and also features the occasional live band, free dance lessons, and karaoke.

Neighborhood Parks

Neighborhood parks found in Brookville-Seminary Valley are limited to two free parks that are both kid-friendly and dog-friendly: All Veterans Park and Brookvalley Park. All Veterans Park features an observation deck, a memorial park, picnic areas, and plenty of trails for biking and jogging. The park also includes a designated area for dogs. The Charles Beatley Bridge connects All Veterans to Brookvalley Park. At Brookvalley, visitors can rent a garden plot to cultivate, have a picnic, walk or bicycle along the numerous available trails, or take the kids to the playground. The area is also home to the oldest tree in Alexandria, known as the Bicentennial Tree. Dora Kelley Nature Park, Fort Ward Park, Loftridge Park, Cameron Run Regional Park, and Ben Brenman Park are other notable green spaces near Brookville-Seminary Valley. The latter is a popular grassy spot just moments away from the community and offers ample amount of sport fields, a fenced dog park, a scenic pond, and picnic tables perfect for the summer days.

Brookville-Seminary Valley is a wonderful neighborhood providing a somber respite for its residents. Housing properties found here are well diversified, plus nearby attractions like the Metro station and Fort Ward Park are other draws for homebuyers.
